Abstract

Habaib have significantly contributed to religious life in Southeast Asia. Not only for the Muslim community, but also for people across the region with various religious and ethnic backgrounds, the contribution of the Habaib has impacted interactions. In Indonesia, Habaib have recorded their remarkable contribution to the history of the establishment of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). This has, in fact, shown that the contribution of the Habaib has become one of the most significant aspects of religious life in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. The people of Pontianak City have an urgent need to address the role of Habaib in the city's religious and social life, since it was founded by Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman, one of the influential Habaib in Borneo. This paper urges exploring the contributions of Habaib from time to time so that they become an integral part of the development of modern Pontianak City society today. The findings of this work indicate that the challenges and opportunities faced by the Habaib have become an important part of the dynamics of religious authority in Pontianak City. In addition, the position of the Habaib in the history of the sultanate and the people who experienced the ups and downs of their interaction prove to be a barometer of their role in society. Moreover, it turns out that the collective memory and characterization of Habaib have become an important part of the religious practices of the people in Pontianak City. Finally, this work emphasizes that the Habaib have played a significant role in the dynamics of religious life and have even promoted social cohesion in the multi-religious and ethnic Pontianak society.
