Abstract

This study examines the forms of social harmony and the factors sustaining relations between followers of the Naqsabandiyah Khalidiyah and Akmaliyah Sufi orders in Banjarejo Village, Grobogan, Central Java, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research explores socio-religious interactions, attitudes toward differences in spiritual practices, and economic interdependence between the two communities. Data were collected through purposive interviews with spiritual guides (mursyids) and followers of both Sufi orders and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that harmonious relations are maintained despite differences in religious leadership, spiritual lineages, devotional practices, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Such harmony is sustained through shared religious and community activities, spiritual guidance emphasizing a common commitment to drawing closer to God, and economic cooperation between farmers and traders in the supply of agricultural inputs and the marketing of agricultural produce. These findings demonstrate that differences in Sufi affiliations do not necessarily create barriers to social interaction. Rather, shared activities, mutual respect, and economic interdependence provide important foundations for maintaining relationships across Sufi communities. This study contributes to the understanding of social Sufism by highlighting how everyday religious, social, and economic practices can sustain harmony without requiring uniformity in spiritual traditions.
