Abstract

Spiritual self-awareness is an essential component of counselor competence because personal values, beliefs, and spiritual orientations may influence how counselors understand clients and engage in counseling relationships. This study aims to construct a conceptual framework of Muslim counselors’ spiritual self-awareness by interpreting the teachings of Syekh Yusuf Al-Makassari contained in the Lontara Riwayaqna Tuanta Salamaqa ri Gowa (RTSG) manuscript and bringing them into dialogue with the ASERVIC concept of Counselor Self-Awareness. This study employed a qualitative approach using Gadamerian hermeneutics. The primary data consisted of the transcribed and translated RTSG manuscript, while secondary sources included literature on Syekh Yusuf Al-Makassari, counselors’ spiritual competence, and Gadamerian hermeneutics. Data were analyzed through pre-understanding, dialogue with the text, sub-interpretation, whole interpretation, and pattern of interpretation, emphasizing the part-and-whole relationship and the fusion of horizons between the text and the conceptual framework. The findings generated four interconnected constructs of Muslim counselors’ spiritual self-awareness: Tawhidic spiritual awareness, counselors’ Rabbani orientation, spiritual humility, and counselors’ spiritual integration. These constructs form a progressive pattern, from recognizing divine values and reflecting on the influence of personal spirituality to acknowledging personal limitations and actualizing spiritual values in professional conduct. The findings demonstrate that Syekh Yusuf Al-Makassari’s teachings enrich the concept of Counselor Self-Awareness through an Islamic spiritual perspective rooted in the indigenous Makassar tradition.
